When it comes to losing weight, people are more motivated by vanity than the chance of lowering their risk of cancer, the results of a new survey have found.

According to the survey, which was carried out by Cancer Research UK, 40% of people think looking good is an advantage of maintaining a healthy body weight. This compares to 32% who believe the advantage is that it lowers the risk of cancer.

At least two in three people however picked reducing the risk of heart disease as one of the advantages.

The organisation believes that the findings show a widespread lack of knowledge about the link between obesity and cancer. It points out that obesity increases the risk of bowel, stomach, oesophageal and kidney cancer, as well as cancer of the womb and breast in postmenopausal women.

Over 4,000 people took part in the survey. Respondents were offered a number of reasons to choose from, such as 'to make me feel healthier', 'to lower my risk of cancer' and 'to look good'.

A happy emotional state is the key to losing weight and obtaining physical fitness, according to a U.S. author who lost 80 pounds himself.

Those who are happy burn more calories than those who are depressed or angry, according to Joe Vitale, author of "The Attractor Factor and Life's Missing Instruction Manual."

Vitale said after years of struggling with his Buddha-like proportions he developed an Atlas-like physique by focusing on what he wanted, not on what he didn't want. Therefore, his weight-loss program places more emphasis on happiness than dieting.

"Unhappy people tend to sit in front of the television and overeat and do nothing but complain," he said. "Even if they are feeling frustrated, sad, or angry, they tend to bottle their energy and do little to nothing with it. As a result, they get fat."

Vitale said he began to lose weight when he began to do what makes him happy.

"Happy people tend to take actions that burn more calories," he said. "As a result, they get trimmer."

08th August 2006 : The Gastric Band

Gastric band is better than 500-calorie diet, study says

Adjustable gastric banding is a more effective long-term solution than a very-low-calorie diet for people who are about 50 pounds overweight, a study shows.

Medical guidelines already support this surgical procedure in patients who are extremely obese, about 100 or more pounds over a healthy weight, or those who are almost as overweight and have serious medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. The procedure puts a band around the top of stomach to create a feeling of fullness.

Researchers at Monash University Medical School in Melbourne, Australia, recruited 80 patients who were on average 52 pounds over a healthy weight. Half had the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery. advertisement

08th August 2006 : The Purina Diet

I have a Labrador retriever.

I was buying a large bag of Purina at Wal-Mart and was in line to check out.

A woman behind me asked if I had a dog?

On impulse, I told her that no, and that I was starting The Purina Diet again. Although I probably shouldn't because I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy who was behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me.

I told her no; I'd been sitting in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

I thought the guy was going to need help as he staggered to the door!!!
