A new weight loss supplement using Hoodia Gordonii promises rapid results, but are they too fast? Company says that accompanying meal plan prevents unhealthy, too-quick weight loss.

Health officials and weight loss experts say they believe the newly discovered Hoodia Gordonii, a plant that tricks the brain by making the stomach feel full, is the silver bullet they’ve been seeking for decades.

A new pill, called DiatrinH, contains the appetite suppressant Hoodia, which is found inside cactus trees in the African Kalahari desert. The San Bushmen of the Kalahari, one of the world’s oldest and most primitive tribes, have been eating Hoodia for thousands of years to stave off hunger during long hunting trips.

The first scientific investigation of the plant was conducted at South Africa’s national laboratory. Because Bushmen were known to eat hoodia, it was included in a study of indigenous foods.

"What they found was when they fed it to animals, the animals ate it and lost weight,"

says Dr. Richard Dixey, who heads an English pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm.

Question: I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Why does my doctor tell me to lose weight?

Answer: Sleep apnea, a serious breathing disorder that can affect other aspects of your health, is more likely to occur in people who are overweight. Men, and people with a family history of the condition, also are more likely to develop the condition.

Most treatment regimens begin with lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and quitting smoking.

Typically, sleep apnea is caused by relaxation of the soft tissue in the back of your throat that blocks the passage of air. Fat deposits around your upper airway also may be a factor. As a result, your level of blood oxygen drops. The brain senses this decrease and briefly rouses you from sleep, causing you to gasp or choke so that you can reopen your airway. This can happen 20 or 30 times an hour, and each episode can last up to 20 seconds. Upon awakening, you may have a dry throat or headache, and feel sleepy and fatigued during the day.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the chance of having high blood pressure and even a heart attack or stroke. It can also increase the risk of diabetes.

Even a small weight loss has been shown to decrease sleep apnea episodes. Choosing foods wisely also helps lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, which occur more often with this diagnosis.

To get you started:

# Reduce your portions by half to cut down on calories.

# Choose healthy snacks, like fresh fruit, once or twice a day.

# Include high-fiber foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, salads and oatmeal. Cut back on fried foods, and those high in saturated and trans fat.

# Watch your salt intake by not adding salt to foods, and choosing fresh foods and those low in salt.

# Limit eating out to once or twice a week.

# Be more active. Walk 30 minutes a day, four times a week.

# Limit caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Although a drink may help some people fall asleep, it interrupts deep sleep cycles and worsens the quality of sleep.

Fat burners, diet pills, nutritional supplements ? you know who gets the most out of these products? The manufacturers and sellers.

Some of this stuff is extracted from foods and has a role in nutrition, but it’s not a substitute for eating right. And much of the “miracle” drugs you see advertised are exceedingly dangerous to you. Don’t believe me? The next time you see an advertisement in a weight loss magazine for one of these “miracle” products ? or if you see a commercial on TV for one ? read or listen to the DISCLAIMERS AND WARNINGS that accompany these ads. A lot of this stuff is dangerous and it has no place in a healthy, permanent weight loss and fitness lifestyle.

Sure, if you’re willing to risk exposing your body to these drugs, you might be able to lose some weight ? at first. But you will experience no long-term benefits ? none! In fact, it’s really much worse than that. “Dieting” in any form that denies your body the essential nutrients and calories it needs to function efficiently can cause you to lose weight…until you stop the diet. And anyone who has “dieted” knows you cannot sustain the diet indefinitely. Your body screams out for nourishment and eventually you give in. That’s when the rebound effect begins. You will inevitably regain all the weight you lost ? PLUS SOME. And the regained weight is predominantly fat. During your diet your body cannibalized some of your lean muscle to use as fuel. After the diet, your regained weight does not come back in the form of lean muscle plus some fat ? it comes back almost exclusively as fat.

Weight Loss Due to Bariatric Surgery Harms Bone Density: Presented at ADA

Weight loss as a result of bariatric surgery may be detrimental to bone health, according to research presented here at the 66th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Robert Considine, PhD, PhD, assistant professor, endocrinology division, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana, and associates examined the effect of weight loss on serum markers of bone turnover in 10 premenopausal women and 10 middle-aged men before and 6 months after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

Population-adjusted rates of bariatric surgery increased more than 7-fold in the U.S. population, from 3.5 per 100,000 in 1996 to 24.0 per 100,000 in 2002.

It is imperative that the long-term effects of the significant weight loss associated with bariatric surgery be investigated, Dr. Considine said in his presentation on June 11th.
Results of the study showed that while bariatric surgery-induced weight loss may have a significant positive effect on lipid and glucose metabolism, these patients have significant reductions in body mass index.

At baseline and at 6 months after surgery, the researchers measured levels of serum osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and N-telopeptide cross-linked collagen type 1 (NTX), which are indicative of bone resorption.
At 6 months, there was a decrease in mean body mass index (BMI) of 31.0% ± 2.3% in men and 32.4% ± 1.6% in women.
